How to Open or Reopen a Bank Account
You need a bank account to receive payments (like Centrelink), pay bills, etc. and to rebuild your financial independence.
What You Need
- Identification documents: birth certificate, driver licence, passport, or Corrections-issued photo ID with name and D.O.B.
- Proof of address if you have one (e.g. utility bill or support service letter)
- Support from a reintegration program or caseworker if possible
- Ability to receive a new debit card
- Safe place for receiving mail and accessing banking information
Check Your Situation
- If you had an account before, check if it’s still active or if it can be reopened.
- Use re-entegration services to support ID recovery, paperwork and bank setup
- If you’ve arranged Crisis Payments, make sure your bank account is ready to receive payments

Tips
If you feel nervous, you can bring a support person, such as a friend, advocate, or support worker. If staff speak too fast or things don’t make sense, it’s okay to ask them to slow down and explain things clearly. If you don’t have the usual documents, ask about using Corrections ID, referral letters, or other options.
