The MARA Money Matters program is part of the Beyond the Bars offering. We support incarcerated Women by providing practical education on managing debt, understanding credit, identifying scams, and accessing financial entitlements.
Current Eligibility
- Currently offered exclusively to women involved in the justice system.
- Ongoing support is also available to participants upon release, to help maintain momentum and stability when re-enter the community.
- There are future plans to expand access to include women post-release.

Why Money Matters Exist?
The program was developed by women, for women - shaped by the lived experiences of those in custody - and created to empower women in the justice system with the financial knowledge, tools, and confidence they need to take control of their futures. Many women enter custody with complex financial challenges - from debt and fines to damaged credit and limited access to support. Mara Money Matters addresses these issues head-on through practical, relevant education and personalised support. We help women understand their rights and responsibilities, navigate their finances and equips them to make informed decisions that impact not only their own lives, but also the wellbeing of their families and communities. It's the start of a pathway to intergenerational change, where financial empowerment becomes a catalyst for lasting transformation.
